Top 5 Buzz Bands

Words by Declan // @declanmr

  • 5 top new bands to wrap your ears around
  • Leave any political affiliations at the door
  • McDonalds are Fascists
  • When was the last time you heard a band sing about Salad Cream?

1. shame – The South-London lads 'shame' have torn the rulebook apart when it comes to political correctness and have created their own bubble; tackling socio-political issues, inequalities and Mrs May herself. Their bruising nature greets you almost instantly on their current available catalogue, and when witnessing them live expect treble the impact plus sore ears for good measure. (Recommended Song: Tasteless)

2. HMLTD – Another London breakthrough, HMLTD (formerly known as 'Happy Meal') are a six-piece band making waves for the avant-garde and the quirkier side of indie music. Their newest single ‘To The Door’ is unequivocally western-esque and sits oddly (in a nice way) in-between Hard-Fi and Scissor Sisters. (Recommended Song: Stained)

3. Goat Girl – Just one more London band for you: Quartet 'Goat Girl' are one of Rough Trade’s newest recruits and with two 7” singles sold out in minutes, the hype around this band is fraught. With a headline tour coming up in November, and an EP in the works, we'd highly recommend snapping up a ticket. Recent single ‘Crow Cries’ is a gothic masterpiece with a brooding bass and tumbling drum beats matched with mysteriously haunting vocals. (Recommended Song: Mighty Despair)

4. Okudaxij – Los Angeles based 'Okudaxij' have recently dropped second EP 'fear of pleasure' and are due to release their next batch of material. Combining indie-folk with electronica, they have been plugged by indie dreamboat Will Joseph Cook and near enough all credible music publications. (Recommended Song: Who Knocks?)

5. The Rhythm Method – This dastardly duo are the digital natives version of 'WHAM!'. They breathe new life into disco-pop and, in similar fashion to 'shame' listed above, raise interesting topics through their music; London demonstrations, LGBT and perhaps most importantly Salad Cream. Expect them to cover all news stories in boogie chorus for years to come. (Recommended Song: Cruel)
